What Does A Healthy Weight Look Like In Dogs?

When raising a furry friend, it can be easy to allow them to overindulge in treats, biscuits and extra-large dinners. Even with plenty of exercise, however, this cannot help them maintain a healthy weight, and over time, extra weight on their legs can stress joints, harm bones and deteriorate muscles.

For your dog’s longevity, a healthy weight matters. But how do you know what that looks like when every breed is different, and some pets may complain that a suitable dinner isn’t enough?

We’ve broken it down below:

The Top Down View

Stand directly above your dog and look down. This is one of the easiest ways to test if they are at a healthy weight or if they might need fewer biscuits at dinner time. In all breeds, there should be a clear inward curve behind their ribs that forms an hourglass figure.

If they appear straight, rectangular, or barrel-like, they are carrying extra weight and may need weight management food. Fortunately, we have plenty of dog food options at PetNest, including the Black Hawk Healthy Benefits Weight Management Dog Food.

The Side View

If you can’t draw a conclusion when looking from above, or you’d like a second look, the side view is your next best test. Squat so you are at eye level with your dog from the side. Their belly should naturally slope upward from the end of their ribcage toward their back legs. If their belly sags or is flat, it’s an indication they are overweight.

Maybe you're actually worried your pet may look underweight? The K9 Natural Beef Feast Canned Dog Food is perfect for supporting healthy weight gain and muscle development.

The Rib Test

Did you know you should be able to feel the ribs of a dog at a healthy weight? The rib test involves rubbing your hand along the side of your dog’s chest. Take notice of what you feel. You should be able to feel each rib beneath a thin layer of fat, similar to running your knuckles over the back of your hand.

If the flesh feels softer or it’s harder to detect the ribs, it could be a sign that your dog needs weight management.

Still want to treat your pet? Not all treats are the same! The Bell & Bone Healthy Treats, Weight and Energy - Duck & Fibre are great for giving extra love without being high in fat and nasty ingredients.
