Dog Breeds That Are Great For Families

If your little ones have begun asking for a pet dog, and you believe the time is right to introduce a four-legged friend into your home, you may be in the process of researching breeds and dog care. However, with so much information available on the internet, this journey can quickly become overwhelming and tiring, especially if you haven’t owned a dog before.

Fortunately, many breeds are phenomenal for families, especially those with young children. We’ve detailed some of the best-tempered breeds below. As a reminder, however, this is only a general guide, and pet circumstances do matter. It’s important to meet your future pooch before bringing them home to gain an understanding of their unique personality.

Small Family-Friendly Dogs

Small dogs that rank as being great for kids include Beagles, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Pugs, Shih Tzus, Maltese Terriers and French Bulldogs. These pooches are usually friendly and intelligent, but also like their own space, meaning they can entertain themselves when you’re out enjoying the world. They can be easy to train, making walking them on a leash or harness simple. This way, when you’re little one wants to take over or try it for themselves, they can easily adapt.

Medium Family-Friendly Dogs

If you’re looking for something a little larger for your family, many medium-sized dogs are the perfect fit for families. Common choices include Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Australian Shepherds, Basset Hounds and Whippets. These pooches are highly intelligent and easily trainable, making them a great fit for a family with its hands busy. They’re also emotionally intelligent, meaning they have a great understanding of when it’s time for fun and when it’s time for a break. They play well with toys and can entertain themselves well when they’re not with their family.

Large Family-Friendly Dogs

If a gentle giant is on your mind, you’re in luck. Many large dogs are incredibly family-friendly and make great additions to your home. Some of the most popular include Bernese Mountain Dogs, Newfoundlands, Great Danes and Greyhounds. These dogs are patient and playful, but also love nap time, meaning you have ample running and relaxing time. These dogs are also loyal and protective, making them ideal for when your little human is out and about with them. As they are larger in size, we always recommend that they be walked by an adult to keep your children safe.

Remember, history matters.

All dogs have a unique history, just like humans. Breeding standards for puppies or past experiences for older dogs can influence their temperament and how they act around children. When shopping for a pet with a young family, the more past information you can uncover, the better. This means you’ll have a deepened understanding of what your dog likes, dislikes and how they manage different situations.
